Duties

Help

The incumbent is assigned to Facilities Management Service (FMS), Safety Section, as an administrative and technical advisor to the Safety and Occupational Health Manager. As a Safety & Occupational Health Specialist, he/she is responsible for providing program pertinent technical advice and assistance. Incumbent must stay informed as to changes in applicable codes and regulations, keeping management informed of such changes. The incumbent plans, coordinates, and conducts safety training activities for the directorate and contractor staff in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and all other governing organizations. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS FOR GS-09: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Candidates must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-07 or equivalent). Specialized Experience is defined as experience that has provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist. Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position; managing safety or occupational health program elements; developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management; applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR GS-11: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Candidates must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-09 or equivalent). Specialized Experience is defined as experience that has provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: managing safety or occupational health program elements; developing emergency readiness and response training programs; develops and projects budget requirements; applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety, health requirements, and emergency management; developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards; developing or implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses; analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards; designing or modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards; inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards; training of workers, supervisors, managers, etc.

Education

QUALIFICATION FOR GS-09: EDUCATION: Possess Master's degree or successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree, or an equivalent graduate degree or LL.B or J.D., with a major study in a safety or occupational health field (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

COMBINATION OF SPECILIZED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION FOR GS-09: Possess the equivalent combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above to meet total qualification requirements for the GS-09 position.

QUALIFICATION FOR GS-11: EDUCATION: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.B or J.D., if related. Must have a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or a degree in another related field that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering and industrial psychology. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted at the time of application.

COMBINATION OF SPECILIZED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION FOR GS-11: A combination of education and specialized experience, as described above GS-11 requirements.
